I like to think of the tri community as a big family. Sure, we don't always all get along. There are definitely sibling rivalries, but in the end the things that bind us together: love of sport and an enjoyment of the outdoors overshadow anything that might divide us.
Triathlon can be a very dangerous sport. When we cycle on the open road we expose ourselves to hazards ranging from potholes, stray dogs, or inattentive motorists. We put ourselves on the line because we enjoy seeing how fast we can go, or for how long. We ride on the road because of our desire to be a part of the world and to enjoy the outdoors. The open road calls to us and we respond.
This past Saturday Michael Argall was struck and killed by a motorist while riding in Frederickburg. I don't have any specifics about the accident except that apparently the motorist was blinded by the sun and didn't see him. I'm not sure who was at fault, or if there was any fault to assign. No matter the circumstances, this is a hard loss for our extended family. Michael was a well loved coach, a disciplined triathlete, and a decent guy. He will be missed.
When you have a moment, head over to
Please Be Kind to Cyclists. Their mission is to affect how motorists and cyclists share the road, and make it safer for everyone on the streets. To me, this is a worthy goal, and one that we all should support.
Be safe on the roads, both as a driver and cyclist. We can't afford to lose any more members of our family.
